Washing Your Textiles
Before First Use
Always wash new textiles before first use! This removes manufacturing residue, softens the fabric, and prepares it for optimal performance.
First wash tips:
- Wash dark colors separately to prevent color transfer
- Use cold water (30°C) for dark colors, warm (40°C) for light colors
- Expect minimal shrinkage (2-3%) — we account for this in our sizing
- Fabric will soften significantly after first wash
Water Temperature Guide
Cotton Bedding (Percale, Jersey, Flannel): 40-60°C
Linen Bedding: 30-40°C (cooler water preserves texture)
Towels: 60°C for best hygiene and deep cleaning
Colored Items: 30-40°C to preserve color vibrancy
Belgian tip: Most Belgian washing machines default to 40°C, which is perfect for regular bedding care.
Detergent & Additives
Use:
- Mild, liquid detergent (powder can leave residue)
- Eco-friendly detergents to maintain OEKO-TEX® safety standards
- Oxygen-based bleach for whites (safe and effective)
Avoid:
- Chlorine bleach (weakens fibers, introduces harsh chemicals)
- Fabric softener for towels (reduces absorbency)
- Excessive detergent (causes buildup and residue)
For towels: Skip fabric softener entirely. Use white vinegar (1/2 cup) in the rinse cycle instead to maintain softness and absorbency.
Load Size & Machine Settings
Don't overload! Items need space to move freely for thorough cleaning and rinsing.
Recommended settings:
- Gentle or normal cycle (avoid heavy-duty unless heavily soiled)
- Extra rinse cycle for sensitive skin or allergies
- Spin speed: Medium to high (removes more water, faster drying)
Washing Different Items
Duvet Covers:
- Turn inside out to protect colors and prints
- Zip or button closed to prevent snagging
- Wash with similar colors and weights
- Check pockets for small items before washing
Fitted Sheets:
- Unfold elastic edges completely
- Wash with like colors
- Remove promptly after washing to minimize wrinkles
- Deep pocket sheets (30cm) fit in standard machines
Pillowcases:
- Turn printed cases inside out
- Can be washed more frequently than other bedding
- Wash weekly (or twice weekly for acne-prone skin)
- 65x65cm European standard fits easily in machines
Towels:
- Shake out before washing to fluff fibers
- Wash separately from clothing (prevents lint transfer)
- Don't mix new colored towels with light colors (first 3 washes)
- Wash every 3-4 uses; allow to dry completely between uses
- Bath mats: wash weekly
Drying Your Textiles
Tumble Drying (Machine Drying)
Best practices:
- Use low to medium heat (high heat damages fibers and causes shrinkage)
- Remove items while slightly damp (prevents over-drying)
- Over-drying causes shrinkage, stiffness, and fiber damage
- Add wool dryer balls to reduce wrinkles and improve softness
For towels:
- Medium heat is acceptable
- Shake out before drying to fluff fibers
- Don't over-dry (reduces softness and absorbency)
- Remove promptly and fold immediately
For bedding:
- Low to medium heat
- Remove while slightly damp
- Hang or lay flat to finish air drying
- Smooth out wrinkles while warm
Line Drying (Air Drying)
Benefits:
- Most eco-friendly option (zero energy use)
- Natural sunlight has antibacterial properties
- No risk of heat damage or shrinkage
- Fresh outdoor scent
- Extends textile lifespan significantly
Tips for Belgium:
- Best months: April-September (warmer, drier weather)
- Hang in direct sunlight when possible
- Turn dark colors inside out to prevent sun fading
- Shake items well before hanging to reduce wrinkles
- Indoor drying racks work well in winter months
Drying time: 4-8 hours outdoors (depending on weather), 12-24 hours indoors
Ironing & Wrinkle Care
When to Iron
Generally unnecessary for:
- Jersey cotton (naturally wrinkle-resistant)
- Flannel cotton (soft, relaxed texture)
- Towels (never need ironing)
Benefits from light ironing:
- Percale cotton (crisp, smooth finish)
- Linen (relaxed, lived-in look is also acceptable)
Ironing Settings
Temperature: Medium heat (cotton setting, 150-180°C)
Best time: While slightly damp for easiest wrinkle removal
For prints: Iron inside out to protect designs
Steam: Use for stubborn wrinkles
Wrinkle Prevention
- Remove from dryer promptly
- Fold or hang immediately while warm
- Don't over-dry (causes set-in wrinkles)
- Use dryer balls to reduce wrinkles
- Smooth items by hand when hanging to line dry
Stain Removal Guide
Golden Rule: Act Quickly!
The faster you treat a stain, the better your chances of complete removal. Fresh stains are 10x easier to remove than set-in stains.
Common Stains & Solutions
Blood:
- Rinse immediately with cold water (never hot — sets the stain)
- Soak in cold salt water (1 tbsp salt per liter) for 30 minutes
- Apply hydrogen peroxide directly to stain (for white items)
- Wash normally in cold water
Oil/Grease (makeup, food, body oils):
- Apply dish soap directly to dry stain
- Gently rub to work in
- Let sit for 10-15 minutes
- Wash in hottest safe water (40-60°C)
Wine/Juice/Coffee:
- Blot immediately (don't rub — spreads the stain)
- Sprinkle with salt or baking soda to absorb liquid
- Rinse with cold water or club soda
- Apply white vinegar or stain remover
- Wash normally
Makeup (foundation, lipstick, mascara):
- Apply dish soap or makeup remover to stain
- Gently rub with fingers or soft brush
- Rinse with warm water
- Repeat if necessary, then wash normally
Sweat/Yellowing (white pillowcases, sheets):
- Soak in mixture of 1 part white vinegar + 2 parts water for 1 hour
- Or use oxygen bleach (follow package directions)
- Wash in hot water (60°C)
- Line dry in direct sunlight (natural bleaching effect)
Stain Treatment Tips
- Always test on small, hidden area first
- Blot, don't rub (prevents spreading and fiber damage)
- Work from outside of stain toward center
- Never put stained items in dryer (heat permanently sets stains)
- For stubborn stains, repeat treatment before drying
Storage & Maintenance
Proper Storage
Never store dirty textiles! Always wash and dry completely before storing.
Storage location:
- Cool, dry place (linen closet, bedroom closet)
- Away from direct sunlight (prevents fading)
- Good air circulation (prevents musty odors)
- Avoid damp basements or attics
Storage containers:
- Breathable cotton bags or pillowcases (best option)
- Open shelves or drawers
- Avoid plastic bags (traps moisture, causes mildew)
Folding & Organization
Folding tips:
- Fold neatly to minimize wrinkles
- Don't over-stack (causes permanent creases)
- Store sets together for easy access
- Label shelves by size (Single, Double, Queen, King)
Fitted sheet folding: Fold corners into each other, then fold into rectangle. Watch tutorial videos for step-by-step guidance.
Rotation Schedule
Why rotate? Distributes wear evenly, extends lifespan significantly
Recommended:
- Have 2-3 sets of each bedding item
- Rotate weekly when changing sheets
- Properly rotated textiles last 5-10 years
Shop complete bedding sets to build your rotation.

My white items are yellowing
Cause: Body oils, sweat, age
Solution: Soak in oxygen bleach solution, wash in hot water (60°C), line dry in direct sunlight (natural bleaching)
Why Your Textiles Get Better With Age
Cotton Improves With Washing
Unlike synthetic materials that degrade over time, quality cotton actually gets softer and more comfortable with each wash!
Why this happens:
- Each wash removes sizing and manufacturing chemicals
- Fibers relax and soften naturally
- Fabric becomes more breathable and comfortable
- OEKO-TEX® certified cotton is especially durable
Expected lifespan with proper care:
- Bedding: 5-10 years
- Towels: 3-7 years
- Premium quality (like ours): Often exceeds these ranges
Sustainability benefit: Durable textiles reduce waste and environmental impact. Quality over disposability!
Eco-Friendly Care Tips
Reduce Environmental Impact
- Wash full loads to save water and energy
- Use cold water when possible (saves 90% of energy vs. hot water)
- Line dry when weather permits (zero energy use)
- Choose eco-friendly, biodegradable detergents
- Skip fabric softener (chemicals pollute waterways)
- Invest in quality textiles that last years (reduces waste)
Belgian context: Belgium has excellent water quality, making eco-friendly detergents highly effective. Line drying is common in Belgian homes, especially in warmer months.
Our commitment: All our textiles are OEKO-TEX® certified, meaning they're free from harmful chemicals and safe for you and the environment. Learn about OEKO-TEX®.
