OEKO-TEX Certification

OEKO-TEX® Certification

Every product we sell is independently tested and certified safe

What is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100?

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is one of the world's most respected independent textile testing and certification systems. It guarantees that every component of our textiles—from threads to dyes to finishing treatments—has been rigorously tested for harmful substances and is safe for human contact.

At ZM Textiles Belgium, we refuse to stock anything that doesn't carry this certification. Your safety and health are non-negotiable.

Why OEKO-TEX® Matters

✅ Independent Third-Party Testing

Unlike self-certification or manufacturer claims, OEKO-TEX® testing is conducted by independent, accredited laboratories. This means you can trust the results—they're not marketing claims, they're verified facts.

✅ Tests for Over 100 Harmful Substances

Our textiles are tested for:

  • Formaldehyde (linked to skin irritation and respiratory issues)
  • Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury
  • Pesticides used in cotton farming
  • Allergenic dyes and carcinogenic colorants
  • Chlorinated phenols and phthalates
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • pH value (to prevent skin irritation)

✅ Every Component Tested

OEKO-TEX® doesn't just test the final fabric—it tests every single component:

  • Raw fibers (cotton, linen)
  • Threads and stitching
  • Dyes and colorants
  • Finishing treatments
  • Labels and tags
  • Elastic bands and zippers

If any component fails, the entire product fails certification.

✅ Annual Renewal Required

OEKO-TEX® certifications aren't permanent. They must be renewed annually with fresh testing to ensure ongoing compliance with the latest safety standards. This means our products meet current safety requirements, not outdated ones.

✅ Exceeds EU REACH Regulations

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 goes beyond the European Union's REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations. While REACH sets minimum safety standards, OEKO-TEX® sets higher, more stringent limits for harmful substances.

Who Benefits from OEKO-TEX® Certification?

👶 Babies & Children

Babies have thinner, more sensitive skin that absorbs substances more easily. OEKO-TEX® certified textiles are tested to the strictest standards (Product Class I) for baby products, ensuring they're safe for the most vulnerable users.

🧑 Sensitive Skin & Allergies

If you experience skin irritation, eczema, or allergies, OEKO-TEX® certified textiles eliminate common irritants like allergenic dyes, formaldehyde, and harsh chemicals that can trigger reactions.

🧘 Health-Conscious Consumers

You spend 6-8 hours per night in direct contact with your bedding. OEKO-TEX® certification ensures you're not breathing in or absorbing harmful chemicals while you sleep.

🌿 Eco-Minded Shoppers

OEKO-TEX® testing includes environmental criteria. Certified textiles have lower environmental impact during production and are safer to dispose of at end-of-life.

🏨 Hospitality Professionals

Hotels, spas, and Airbnb hosts choosing OEKO-TEX® certified textiles can market their commitment to guest health and safety. It's a competitive advantage that builds trust.

OEKO-TEX® Product Classes

OEKO-TEX® uses four product classes with different testing criteria based on intended use:

Product Class I: Baby Products

Strictest limits for products intended for babies and toddlers (up to 3 years). Our baby-safe textiles meet these highest standards.

Product Class II: Direct Skin Contact

For textiles in direct contact with skin (bedding, towels, underwear). All ZM Textiles products meet Class II standards.

Product Class III: No Direct Skin Contact

For textiles without direct skin contact (jackets, coats). Not applicable to our product range.

Product Class IV: Decoration Materials

For decorative textiles (curtains, tablecloths). Not applicable to our product range.

OEKO-TEX® vs. Other Certifications

OEKO-TEX® vs. Organic (GOTS)

Different focus, both valuable:

  • OEKO-TEX®: Tests finished products for harmful substances (safety focus)
  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Certifies raw materials are organically grown (environmental focus)

Many of our products carry both certifications—organic materials AND safety testing. See our Sustainability & Certifications page.

OEKO-TEX® vs. Self-Certification

Some brands claim their products are "chemical-free" or "safe" without third-party verification. OEKO-TEX® provides independent, laboratory-tested proof—not just marketing claims.

100% of Our Products Are OEKO-TEX® Certified

We don't offer "some" certified products—every single item in our store carries OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification:

  • Avoid Bleach: Can introduce harmful chemicals not present in certified products

See our Textile Care Guide for detailed instructions.

OEKO-TEX® FAQ

OEKO-TEX® certifications must be renewed annually with fresh laboratory testing. This ensures ongoing compliance with evolving safety standards.

Are OEKO-TEX® products safe for babies?

Yes! OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 includes Product Class I specifically for baby products, with the strictest safety limits. Our textiles meet or exceed these standards.

Does OEKO-TEX® test for allergens?

Yes. Testing includes allergenic dyes, formaldehyde, and other common skin irritants. OEKO-TEX® certified textiles are ideal for sensitive skin and allergy sufferers.

Is OEKO-TEX® recognized in Belgium and the EU?

Absolutely. OEKO-TEX® is internationally recognized and exceeds EU REACH regulations. It's one of the most trusted textile safety certifications worldwide.

Yes! Contact us at Info@zmtextiles.be or call +32 488 56 42 66 to request copies of our current OEKO-TEX® certificates.

Do all textile brands have OEKO-TEX® certification?

No. OEKO-TEX® certification requires rigorous testing and annual renewal, which many brands skip to reduce costs. We believe your safety is worth the investment.

What happens if a product fails OEKO-TEX® testing?

If any component fails testing, the entire product cannot be certified. We only stock products that pass all tests—no exceptions.
